During an interview with Variety, Pedro Pascal, a renowned actor known for his roles in popular shows like “Game of Thrones” and “The Mandalorian,” expressed his thoughts on diverse casting and addressed the backlash surrounding the portrayal of famous characters in different races and sexes.

Pascal emphasized the importance of embracing change and expanding representation in the entertainment industry. He believed that actors should be seen as individuals rather than being limited to specific ethnic or cultural roles. According to him, the key to progress lies in casting the right person for a role, irrespective of their racial identity.

When discussing the criticism faced by adaptations like “Hamilton,” where historical figures were portrayed by actors of diverse backgrounds, Pascal shrugged off the negative reactions. He dismissed those who become overly upset by such changes, stating that embracing different casting choices is a powerful way to push boundaries and promote inclusivity.

The actor shared an example of his own imagination, contemplating the possibility of a menacing father character being portrayed as a mother. He encouraged approaching these creative decisions with originality and inclusivity, highlighting the need to think beyond established norms and conventions.

However, Pascal acknowledged the valid concerns of using representation solely as a response to political frustrations, cautioning against forcing diversity without considering the impact on storytelling. He believed that representation should serve the narrative rather than simply satisfying a political agenda. Pascal advocated for an ongoing exploration of representation, urging a nuanced understanding of its role and the need for genuine change.

Navigating these complex dynamics, according to Pascal, requires careful attention and open dialogue. He acknowledged the significance of addressing the issue and expressed his hope for a shift in the industry, where the needle moves and meaningful transformations occur.
