David Soul, celebrated for his iconic role in the 1970s TV series “Starsky & Hutch” and a successful music career, has passed away at the age of 80. His wife, Helen Snell, confirmed his death, stating that he died surrounded by family after a courageous battle for life.

Soul, a British-American actor and singer, gained fame as Detective Ken ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson in “Starsky & Hutch,” alongside co-star Paul Michael Glaser. The show’s popularity solidified their status as cultural icons, with Glaser and Soul maintaining a close friendship years after the show ended.

Soul’s personal life was marked by multiple marriages. He first married Miriam ‘Mim’ Solberg in 1964, followed by marriages to Karen Carlson, Patti Carnel Sherman, and Julia Nickson. His final marriage was to Helen Snell, a PR executive whom he met during a stage production of “Deathtrap” in 2002; they married in 2010.

In addition to his acting career, Soul was known for his music. His single “Don’t Give Up On Us Baby” topped charts in the US and UK in 1976. He continued to release successful singles until the late 1970s.

Soul’s love for Britain was profound, and he became a dedicated Arsenal fan, living in Maida Vale for many years. He gained British citizenship in 2004. His affection for the UK was evident in his work and lifestyle, and he often spoke fondly of his experiences in the country.

The actor’s passing prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans and celebrities alike. William Shatner, Carol Alt, Nikki Lund, and Jonathan Cheban, among others, expressed their condolences and admiration for Soul’s impact on the entertainment industry.

Soul’s career spanned various memorable roles in film and television. He appeared in “The Enforcer,” a “Dirty Harry” sequel, and played a lead role in the 1979 adaptation of Stephen King’s “Salem’s Lot.” His earlier career included performances in “Star Trek,” “Here Come The Brides,” and “Magnum Force.”

Despite the end of “Starsky & Hutch,” Soul continued to remain active in the entertainment world, venturing into stage acting in the UK and appearing in TV series like “Holby City.” He also starred in “Jerry Springer – The Opera” in 2004.

Known for his social activism, Soul contributed significantly beyond the entertainment industry. His collaboration with former BBC war reporter Martin Bell in the 1997 UK parliamentary election campaign was a testament to his commitment to social causes.

Soul’s death marks the end of an era for fans of “Starsky & Hutch” and his music, leaving behind a legacy of entertainment and activism. He is survived by his wife, Helen Snell, five sons, a daughter, and a legacy of impactful work in the entertainment industry.
