“In vitro meats” (also known as “clean meats”) are expected to hit the market, maybe by the end of 2018. This is “meat” created in a lab instead of livestock
Dr. Mark Post, CEO of Mosa Meats explains, “the cells start to divide and start to form new muscle tissues. … (We) let them proliferate until we have trillions of cells.” Apparently making a single hamburger patty in this way takes about 9 weeks.
It’s the same technology they use to repair organs… it’s stem cells. Dr. Uma Valeti, CEO of another clean meat manufacturer, Memphis Meats. “At my own cardiology practice, I used stem cells in a clinical study to repair damaged heart muscle,” he said. For any of you looking forward to this, it won’t be cheap (at first). The first “hamburger” created using this method in 2013 sold for $330,000 though Post says that when it becomes available to the public, it “maybe $11 for a hamburger”.
After these experiments began, animal rights activists at PETA offered $1 million to the first scientist to produce and sell in vitro chicken meat in 2014. But the whole process is still dependent on STEM CELLS… guess where we get these stem cells from… living beings.
Rebecca Thistlethwaite, a farmer for the past 10 years, argues that as long as clean meat producers use stem cells, they’re still dependent on animals. “They’re multiplying them in a lab rather than on a farm. … Are they dependent on this industry they say they want to get rid of?”
Even given that, The Independent reported, “But one recent study revealed one-third of Americans would be willing to eat clean meat regularly or as a replacement for farmed meat. To reach that point, companies will have to bring down the cost of mass production.”
The whole thing is nonsense but then… we have infamous Atheist Richard Dawkins who took it a step too far.
