It has been said by Justice Thomas that he will not lower his standards.
Justice Clarence Thomas has come under fire for allegedly covering up his acceptance of free flights from a wealthy Republican supporter. For the first time in decades, he discussed his favorite Christmas traditions with pals on Friday.
According to ProPublica, Thomas was aided by his acquaintance with Harlan Crow, a rich businessman. Crow’s personal belongings, such as his ship, boat, and other expensive items, were fair game for Thomas to do with as he pleased.
However, Thomas said that the Supreme Court’s rigid adherence to its own standards was a major factor in his decision to leave the bench.
We have known them for more than 25 years and they are among our closest friends,” the judge, who has been on the bench for 32 years, said of Harlan and Kathy Crow in a statement posted online on Friday.
We’ve been friends with them for almost 25 years and have made several moves with them. Thomas sought the counsel of senior justices upon his arrival to the Supreme Court. A person is exempt from documenting “personal hospitality” when they have “close personal friends who do not have business before the Court.”
I have done all in my power to uphold the company’s policy of honesty since the first day I started working here. All federal court budget records must now adhere to new guidelines established by the Judicial Conference. I will keep this recommendation in mind.
Crow told ProPublica that he did not make any attempts to persuade Thomas or place him in a position where other powerful individuals might exert pressure on him.
The Thomases have been aided in the same manner that all of our close friends have been, according to the message. We have never attempted to sway Justice Thomas’ opinion by briefing him on pending or lower court issues. I am unaware of any efforts made by mutual friends to sway Justice Thomas’ opinion, and even if I were aware of such an effort, I would not make any effort to contact the offending party.
The federal courts’ rule-making body, the Judicial Conference of the United States, has revised its policies on ethics and financial disclosure. The judges will no longer have access to luxury travel options like private aircraft and 5-star hotels.
After the ProPublica article was published, Senate Democrats demanded that all nine judges adhere strictly to the code of ethics.
The committee’s Democratic leader, Illinois Senator Dick Durbin, said on Thursday that Thomas’s conduct “simply don’t meet the ethical standards that the American people expect of any public servant, let alone a Justice on the Supreme Court.”
A statement issued by Durbin on Thursday said, “Today’s report shows once again that Supreme Court Justices, just like every other federal judge, must be held to a code of conduct that can be enforced.” After the ProPublica article is published, the Senate Judiciary Committee will take action.
Liberals like Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts agree that individuals should shoulder more of the blame for their actions. (D).
The federal court should be led by the rule of law, not the affluent Republicans who support the current administration. Following the events of that day, Warren emphasized the need of judges having “no conflicts of interest” and the “highest ethical standards.”
