As a humanitarian precaution intended to reduce the number of civilian casualties that may result from Israel’s military response to Hamas’ attacks, Israel has given the 1.1 million residents who live in the northern section of Gaza a warning to evacuate within the next 24 hours. The warning, which instructed residents to move south of the Wadi Gaza, also known as the river Gaza, for their own protection, was shared on social media by Jonathan Conricus, a spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The order has been issued in the sake of public safety, and until further notice, residents of Gaza City will not be permitted to return there. Israel has strongly requested that citizens refrain from approaching the border security fence.
Images have been released showing Palestinians fleeing the area as a precautionary measure in reaction to the threat. On the other hand, there are reports that Hamas is preventing Palestinians from evacuating locations that are about to be attacked by Israeli airstrikes. A top official from the organisation is quoted as saying that evacuation is “technically impossible.”
It is common knowledge that Hamas has a presence inside of Gaza City, where it operates through of tunnels dug beneath homes and other buildings inhabited by civilians who serve essentially as human shields. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have said that they intend to continue their operations in Gaza City while making substantial measures to prevent civilian casualties. The ongoing battle between Israel and Hamas has already resulted in a large number of casualties, and it is anticipated that many more losses will occur as Israeli forces apparently prepare for a land invasion of Gaza.
