Regina Santos-Aviles, 35, a regional district director for U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales, passed away following an incident at her home in Uvalde, Texas. EMS, fire, and law enforcement responded after receiving a report late Saturday evening that she had caught on fire.
Authorities found a small blaze behind her residence, which had already been extinguished when firefighters arrived. Santos-Aviles was conscious but suffering from severe burns and was airlifted to a San Antonio hospital. She died the next day.
Officials emphasized that there are currently no signs of foul play. The Texas Rangers, Uvalde Police, and the Medical Examiner’s office are investigating the cause of the fire. Gonzales described her loss as devastating, acknowledging her passion for public service and contributions to her community.
She leaves behind an 8-year-old son.
