Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced he would impose a “100% tariff” on individuals relocating from New York City to Texas if Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani wins the mayoral race, voicing strong opposition to the candidate’s progressive agenda.
Abbott’s statement came as New York City prepares for a closely watched mayoral election, with Mamdani leading a three-way contest against former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani’s platform—featuring rent freezes, free buses and higher income taxes—has drawn both fervent support and fierce criticism.
Though more than 750,000 New Yorkers reportedly said they might leave the city if Mamdani is elected, Abbott’s tariff plan faces serious legal and logistical questions, since interstate tariffs conflict with U.S. constitutional trade protections and federal regulation.
This move adds a new layer to the national attention surrounding the mayoral contest, echoing former President Donald Trump’s intervention in the race and underscoring how municipal elections are increasingly framed as ideological battlegrounds with far-reaching implications.
