A Texas teenager accused in the shooting death of high school football standout Austin Metcalf allegedly admitted to the killing during a disturbing conversation shared with others shortly after the incident.
Authorities say the 17-year-old suspect, whose name has not been publicly released due to his age, is facing serious charges in connection with Metcalf’s death. The victim, a well-known athlete at his school and regarded as a rising talent in Texas football circles, was found fatally shot in what investigators believe was a targeted act of violence.
According to law enforcement, the teen suspect spoke openly about the shooting, providing graphic details of the event in a conversation that was later reported to police. The confession, reportedly made to peers, is now being used as critical evidence in the case.
The incident took place in Kaufman County, where Metcalf was discovered with gunshot wounds. Emergency responders attempted to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators quickly identified the suspect and took him into custody.
Authorities have not disclosed a motive, but they continue to interview witnesses and examine the suspect’s social connections. Officials confirmed that the accused had access to a firearm and believe the shooting was not random.
Metcalf’s death has devastated the local community, where he was celebrated both for his athletic skill and his leadership on and off the field. School officials have offered counseling services to grieving students, while tributes to the fallen teen continue to pour in from across the state.
The case remains under active investigation, and prosecutors are expected to determine whether the suspect will be tried as an adult.
