Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) criticized the leadership of the New York State Democratic Party on Wednesday after the election results showed that New York was moving in the direction of the Republican Party.
The New York representative was making a comment in response to a photograph published by The New York Times that showed an increase in Republican sympathizers in New York since the 2020 election.
The lawmaker said in a letter, “I still maintain my call for Jay Jacob’s resignation from a year ago,” the speaker continued. A spokesman of the Democratic Party stated, “NYS Dem party leadership, which was devastated under Cuomo, stacked with lobbyists, aims to promote GOP, and failed to pass a simple state ballot question to defend NY redistricting, must be held accountable.”
The chair of the New York State Democratic Committee at present is Jay Jacobs.
Ocasio-Cortez tweeted an article about Jacobs from the previous year when he and other notable Democrats in the area decided not to back a candidate for Buffalo mayor. Democratic Socialist India Walton received support from progressive Democrats like Ocasio-Cortez.
Jacobs believed that since there was no Republican candidate, a Democrat would win the election regardless of who received endorsements. He continued by noting that the party was not required to support a candidate just because they had won the primary. In his made-up scenario, David Duke, a former KKK grand wizard, won the Democratic primary in New York.
Imagine that David Duke, the KKK leader who relocated to New York and joined the Democratic party, took part in a Rochester mayoral primary with a low turnout and won the party’s candidacy. Do I have to back David Duke? Jacobs replied, “No, I don’t think that’s accurate. Even if it is evident, is it really important that India Walton does not belong to the same group? It is not necessary. You decided to do something. As a result, it is suitable for the suggestion. If not, they describe it as another item, such as a circumstance.
Jacobs received criticism for his remarks, and several lawmakers even demanded his resignation.
Jacobs then apologized for using David Duke’s primary victory as an extreme case to illustrate his point. India Walton was mentioned twice more in another context. I’m sorry I don’t have a better example.
Ocasio-Cortez tweeted about the David Duke affair on Wednesday, claiming that party head Jacobs had equated a Black female Democratic nominee to the KKK following the party’s embarrassing defeat on a ballot measure that would have kept Democratic House seats. Ocasio-Cortez won her own race and was re-elected as the Democratic congresswoman for New York’s 14th congressional district this election cycle.
