The two House members have agreed to attend together at a next week’s event, despite their political differences.
Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI-7) has received the endorsement of her Republican opponent, Rep. Liz Cheney.
As a prominent opponent of former President Donald Trump and a member of the Democrat-led January 6 group, Cheney has been at odds with a large percentage of her own party. This is the first time she has endorsed a Democrat in a midterm election. Though they disagree on many issues, Cheney lauded Slotkin’s character in a statement released on his campaign website.
“For this reason, I am happy to back Elissa Slotkin. I have gotten to know Elissa throughout our time serving together on the Armed Services Committee as a decent and honorable public servant who works tirelessly for the constituents she serves, seeks the best interests of the country, and does her job with integrity, “In the words of Cheney. “While Elissa and I have our policy disagreements, we need serious, responsible, substantive individuals like Elissa in Congress at a time when our nation is in danger both at home and abroad.”
Although they “definitely don’t agree on every topic,” Slotkin said she is “grateful” for Cheney’s support.
The Slotkin campaign has announced that on November 1, Cheney will join the Democratic congresswoman in Michigan at an event titled “Patriotism and Bipartisanship.”
Next week, “I look forward to having her to Michigan’s 7th District to explore the areas where all Americans can throw politics aside and put our nation above all else,” Slotkin said.
According to Fox News’s Power Rankings, Slotkin’s contest against Republican state Sen. Tom Barrett is a coin flip.
As a result of losing the Republican primary for her district to Harriet Hageman earlier this year, Cheney will be termed out at the end of the year.
The Wyoming Republican has threatened to abandon the GOP if Donald Trump is the party’s presidential nominee in 2024.
