A horrific ambush in North Codorus Township, Pennsylvania, claimed the lives of three detectives from the Northern York County Regional Police Department who were carrying out a warrant. Two more officers were also badly injured in the September 17, 2025, shooting incident.
Detectives Mark Baker, Isaiah Emenheiser, and Sergeant Cody Becker have been named as the deceased policemen. Officials said the team was trying to execute a warrant on Matthew James Ruth, 24, who was being investigated for trespassing and stalking his ex-girlfriend. Ruth was captured on a trail camera, according to the authorities, hiding in the area of the victim’s house and looking inside with a gun.
When the officers arrived on the premises, Ruth fired at them using an AR-style rifle that had been suppressed. In addition to a fourth detective and a sheriff’s deputy who suffered severe injuries before fleeing to safety, the three detectives were slain instantly.
The altercation erupted outdoors, where Ruth kept shooting until he was killed in the crash. A dog that the suspect had killed inside the house was later found by investigators.
The attack was described by Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro as “a heartbreaking reminder of the risks our officers face every day,” and he commended the bravery of the detectives who were killed. According to York County District Attorney Tim Barker, the shooting was a planned ambush connected to domestic abuse.
While the community gets ready for vigils and tributes to memorialize the three men who died while performing their duties, the two injured policemen are still in critical but stable condition.
