During “Saturday Night Live’s” 50th anniversary special, actor Tom Hanks reprised his role as Doug, a Trump-supporting character, in the “Black Jeopardy” sketch. In the skit, Doug, wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat, hesitates to shake hands with the host, Darnell Hayes, portrayed by Kenan Thompson. This portrayal has led to significant backlash from conservative audiences.
Critics argue that the sketch perpetuates negative stereotypes about Trump supporters. Conservative commentator Benny Johnson remarked, “SNL decided it was a good idea to depict Tom Hanks as a ‘Racist Trump Supporter’ in a MAGA Hat afraid to shake a black man’s hand.” Similarly, former Robert F. Kennedy Jr. aide Link Lauren stated, “This tired trope that MAGA is racist is disgusting.”
The “Black Jeopardy” segment, known for its satirical take on cultural and racial issues, has previously featured Hanks in this role. However, the recent portrayal has intensified discussions about the show’s approach to political satire and its impact on public perception.
As of now, neither Tom Hanks nor “Saturday Night Live” representatives have responded to the criticism.
