U.S. Border Czar Tom Homan has come out in full support of Rochester police officers who were reprimanded by city officials after responding to a request for assistance from U.S. Border Patrol agents. The officers, who aided in a recent traffic stop involving suspected immigration violations, were criticized by the city’s leadership for allegedly violating sanctuary policies.
The incident occurred earlier this month when federal agents initiated a stop and called for emergency backup. Rochester officers responded and assisted at the scene. City leaders later stated that their actions were not in line with municipal guidelines, which limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement unless under specific circumstances.
In response, Homan visited Rochester and met with members of the local police union, the Rochester Police Locust Club. During the meeting, he assured officers that their actions were justified and would not go unsupported. Homan praised the officers for prioritizing public safety and condemned what he described as political interference that compromises law enforcement.
He emphasized that help is on the way, suggesting that efforts are underway to provide legal and institutional backing for officers caught in the middle of policy disputes. Homan also criticized the city’s sanctuary policies, arguing they put communities at risk by obstructing cooperation between local and federal agencies.
The situation has triggered renewed debate over the role of local police in immigration enforcement and whether sanctuary policies are effectively protecting residents or hindering public safety. State Senator Robert Ortt also weighed in, defending the officers and calling on city officials to reconsider policies that he believes prevent law enforcement from doing their jobs.
An internal review of the officers’ conduct is currently underway by the Rochester Police Department, though no disciplinary actions have been announced. The event has drawn national attention as tensions continue to grow between local jurisdictions with sanctuary designations and federal agencies seeking cooperation in immigration enforcement efforts.
