Prominent Republican contributor Andy Sabin has counseled former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley to think about withdrawing from the 2024 presidential contest following the results of the New Hampshire primary. In order to get his point across, Sabin, the chairman of Sabin Metals’ board, cited the well-known song “The Gambler” by Kenny Rogers, saying that Haley has to “know when to walk away.”
This advice is given in the wake of Haley’s crushing defeat in the New Hampshire primary by former President Donald Trump. Sabin, who had previously backed Haley, said on Fox News, “She’s down by 31 points in South Carolina right now. There, she has the backing of a governor as well as two senators.” Given that Haley’s home state will likely provide difficulties for her, Senators Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott, along with Governor Henry McMaster, have all embraced Trump.
Former Trump critic Sabin, who pledged not to donate to his campaign, has changed his mind, admitting that Trump may be the only realistic choice for support. Despite his criticisms of Trump’s rhetoric, Sabin conceded the former president’s policy strengths, emphasizing, “As long as he’s the Republican nominee, I’m going to support him.”
The current tensions inside the Republican Party as contenders for the 2024 presidential candidacy are reflected in Sabin’s remarks. His counsel to Haley emphasizes the importance of campaign viability and the power of well-known party funders to sway political outcomes. As the primary season progresses, the strategies and decisions of candidates like Haley will continue to draw attention and analysis from within and outside the party.
