Jane Dipika Garrett, 22, representing Nepal in the Miss Universe 2023 pageant, recently discussed her journey as the first plus-size contestant to reach the top 20 in the competition. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Garrett shared her experiences with body image and her mission to inspire self-acceptance and love.
Garrett, who had aspired to be a model, overcame struggles with low self-esteem and eating disorders to embrace her body confidently. Her progress in the Miss Universe pageant came as a pleasant surprise to her, validating her efforts to overcome personal challenges and represent a more inclusive definition of beauty.
“I really didn’t expect to receive such overwhelming applause or attention on stage. My goal was to represent my country and women worldwide authentically,” Garrett said. “The audience’s response was a breakthrough, affirming that society is ready to embrace real-size beauty.”
Despite her success, Garrett has faced harsh criticism and derogatory comments online. She explained that her weight gain was a result of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal condition that can lead to various symptoms, including weight gain, menstrual irregularities, and fatigue. “People judge me without knowing my story, and that’s their problem,” she remarked.
Garrett highlighted her journey toward self-love and acceptance, overcoming societal pressures and internal doubts. She stressed the importance of a positive mindset and the need to challenge negative societal messages about beauty standards.
Her battle with PCOS has led her to adopt a strict lifestyle, incorporating regular gym visits and a balanced diet to manage the condition’s effects. “It’s about finding what works for you and embracing your unique beauty,” Garrett emphasized.
Garrett also reflected on her childhood, recalling her struggles with mental health and eating disorders due to societal pressures to conform to a certain body type. “I’ve always been naturally curvy, and as a child, I felt the pressure to be thinner,” she shared.
Looking forward, Garrett plans to launch a clothing line designed to make curvy girls feel confident and attractive. She advocates for a balanced approach to health and beauty, warning against the dangers of both extremes in body standards.
“Body positivity, to me, means accepting and loving yourself in whatever body you have while pursuing a healthy lifestyle,” Garrett concluded, emphasizing the importance of self-care and acceptance in the journey toward health and well-being.
