During the holiday weekend, multiple cities experienced outbreaks of violence, resulting in five fatalities and at least 42 injuries.
In a suburb of Chicago, Illinois, during a Juneteenth celebration at a shopping center, a shooting incident took place overnight, leaving at least 20 individuals injured and one person dead. The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Route 83 near Honeysuckle Lane in Willowbrook, according to Battalion Chief Joe Ostrander of the Tri-State Fire Protection District, as reported by WLS. Eyewitnesses stated that the gathering, consisting of over 300 people, was initially intended to commemorate Juneteenth before escalating into chaos.
The DuPage County Sheriff’s Office provided an update, confirming the shooting and stating that one individual had died while others sustained injuries. Among the injured, one person is in critical condition, while the remaining individuals suffered minor wounds.
Witness Markeshia Avery shared her experience, saying, “We just started hearing shooting, so we ducked down until they stopped.” However, the shooting continued, leading the crowd to disperse.
Law enforcement and emergency services responded to the scene of the shooting, which took place during an unauthorized street event involving approximately 300 participants at the Willowbrook retail mall. As of 5:30 a.m., a significant police presence remained, conducting an ongoing investigation. No arrests have been made, and no additional details have been released. The incident in Illinois was not the only violent event during the holiday weekend. In St. Louis, Missouri, at least ten individuals under the age of 18 were shot early Sunday, resulting in one fatality. The incident occurred at approximately 1:45 a.m. near the intersection of Washington Avenue and 14th Street, according to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, as reported by KMOV-TV. Eyewitnesses indicated that the shooting took place inside a building, but further details regarding the victims’ identities and conditions were not immediately available.
Another shooting took place in Washington state on Saturday night near a campsite area where attendees of a nearby music festival were staying. Two people were killed, and three others were injured. The Grant County Sheriff’s Office received a report of gunfire from the campground, located near the city of George, approximately 149 miles east of Seattle, around 8:30 p.m. Authorities pursued the suspect and eventually apprehended them. Information about the victims’ identities and conditions was delayed.
As a result of the shooting, the Sunday events at the Gorge Amphitheatre, part of the Beyond Wonderland electronic music festival, were canceled. The Grant County Sheriff’s Office reported that the shooting occurred in the campsite area near the performance venues, which was designated as an “overflow camping area” for the concert.
In central Pennsylvania, a state trooper and the suspect were killed in a gunfight on Saturday afternoon. The incident unfolded after a trooper was seriously injured in an ambush near the Lewistown barracks around 12:45 p.m. Authorities located the suspect in Walker Township at approximately 3:00 p.m. The identities of the deceased trooper and suspect, as well as the injured trooper’s condition, have not been disclosed at this time.
Additionally, on Saturday night in Southern California, eight individuals were shot and injured during a pool party in Carson, south of Los Angeles. The victims, ranging in age from 16 to 24, were found by the police shortly after midnight. Five individuals at the residence had various injuries, including the head, back, upper body, and lower body. The injured individuals were transported to hospitals, with two of them in critical condition.
Shortly after the pool party shooting, authorities received a report of a nearby car crash. Responding officers discovered a 16-year-old male who had been shot. The case is being actively investigated by more than a dozen detectives.
