Ali Miles, a transgender woman, has filed a $22 million lawsuit against New York City after being placed in a male detention center at Rikers Island. Miles, who goes by Dylan, was detained at Rikers Island from June 14, 2022, to July of the same year before being transferred to Arizona.

She faced charges including felony-level stalking, making a false report of a crime, and aggravated harassment. During her incarceration, Miles alleges she was subjected to rape, physical assault, and harassment. Her lawsuit targets the New York City Department of Correction, the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, and several individuals for the treatment she received.

The lawsuit cites the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) of 2003, aimed at reducing rape incidents in correctional facilities. It claims that despite her requests and court orders, Miles was placed in a men’s housing unit, denied healthcare access, and subjected to sexual and physical abuse.

The document further states that Miles, born biologically male but identifying as a transgender woman, was attacked by the same male inmate on two separate occasions. She also suffered fractured ribs, permanent blindness due to a chemical attack, and lasting harm due to the defendants’ alleged discrimination and indifference.

The lawsuit argues that New York authorities ignored Miles’ pleas for help and protection from sexual victimization. A corrections officer reportedly told Miles, “We don’t do the trans thing here,” which the lawsuit claims is a violation of civil rights law.

The New York City Department of Correction and the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation have been contacted for comment regarding the case.
