A senior Treasury Department official and Representative Maxine Waters engaged in a pointed exchange on Capitol Hill over President Donald Trump’s economic agenda during a congressional hearing.

Waters, a Democratic lawmaker and ranking member on the House Financial Services Committee, challenged the administration’s economic policies, questioning their impact on working-class Americans and broader financial stability. She pressed the Treasury witness on issues including inflation, regulatory oversight, and wage growth.

The Treasury official, tasked with defending elements of the president’s economic strategy, responded by outlining key components of the administration’s approach, including tax policy, labor market performance, and regulatory reform. At times the exchange grew tense, with both sides asserting sharply different interpretations of economic data and policy outcomes.

Other lawmakers observed the interaction as part of a larger debate over contrasting visions for the U.S. economy. Republican members praised the Treasury representative’s defense of the Trump agenda, while Democrats reiterated concerns about income inequality and long-term fiscal challenges.

The hearing underscored deep partisan divides over economic priorities and the role of the federal government in shaping growth, jobs, and market regulation. As Congress continues to weigh funding measures and policy initiatives, lawmakers from both parties are expected to maintain vigorous oversight and debate over the administration’s economic direction.
