The U.S. Treasury Department is reviewing draft designs for a new $1 coin featuring President Donald Trump, with proposals tying the commemorative issue to the 250th anniversary of American independence in 2026.
Preliminary designs showcase Trump’s profile on one side, alongside the inscriptions “Liberty,” “In God We Trust,” and the anniversary years “1776-2026.” The reverse side depicts the president with a raised fist set against the backdrop of the American flag, accompanied by the words “FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT,” a rallying cry Trump used following the 2024 assassination attempt during a campaign event.
Officials confirmed the design is part of the Semiquincentennial Coin Program, authorized by Congress in 2020 to honor the nation’s founding. Treasury insiders emphasized that the artwork is not finalized and could still undergo revisions before the release. The coin is intended for circulation but may also become a collector’s item given its political and historical significance.
Supporters of the design say it reflects Trump’s resilience and enduring influence in American politics, framing the imagery as symbolic of both survival and determination. Critics, however, warn that incorporating a modern political figure into the nation’s official currency risks deepening partisan divides at a time when unity should be the focus of the 250th anniversary celebrations.
If approved, the Trump coin would join a series of special issues planned to commemorate the semiquincentennial, placing the 45th and current 47th president in a spotlight few living leaders have occupied in U.S. numismatic history. The Treasury Department is expected to finalize details of the commemorative series ahead of the 2026 milestone.
