Trump and Mamdani Appear Unexpectedly Warm in First Oval Meeting

In their first official meeting at the White House, President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani presented a surprisingly friendly front, signaling a shift in tone from prior public attacks.

During a 30-minute Oval Office discussion, both leaders emphasized shared concerns such as housing affordability and New York’s economic revival. Trump praised Mamdani as “a rational person” working for the city’s benefit, while Mamdani described the meeting as “productive” and focused on collaboration.

Body language analysts noted several telling gestures. Mamdani kept his hands clasped and maintained a posture described as deferential, while Trump initiated multiple handshakes and pats, reinforcing his role in the room. The stance diverged sharply from earlier clashes, when the president had called Mamdani a “100 % Communist lunatic,” and Mamdani labelled Trump a “despot.”

As the meeting drew to a close, both men nodded in agreement and smiled broadly for the cameras—an image that many saw as a strategic rebirth of a working relationship.
