President Donald Trump officially announced that the responsibilities of the U.S. Department of Education will be redistributed to other federal agencies following his directive to dismantle the department. According to the President, the Small Business Administration (SBA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will assume oversight of the remaining programs once the department ceases operations.
The announcement comes days after Trump signed an executive order initiating the shutdown of the Education Department, a move he says aligns with his administration’s ongoing efforts to reduce federal bureaucracy. Trump emphasized that the reallocation of duties is designed to streamline operations while ensuring that critical educational programs continue without disruption.
Under the new structure, the SBA will oversee education initiatives connected to workforce development, student entrepreneurship, and small business training. Meanwhile, HHS will handle programs related to early childhood education, student health services, and education support for underserved communities.
Trump assured that essential services such as student loan processing, grants, and education support programs will remain functional throughout the transition. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to decentralizing education policy, empowering states and local governments to make decisions on curricula, standards, and funding.
The decision marks a significant shift in federal education oversight and is expected to trigger debates in Congress and among education advocates. However, Trump maintains that the restructuring will reduce waste, improve efficiency, and ultimately serve the interests of American students and families.
