Trump asserts that following the overturn of Roe v. Wade, pro-life voters “disappeared.”
On Monday, former President Trump rejected responsibility for the Republican Party’s poor showing in the 2022 midterm elections, blaming the party’s pro-life wing instead.
After several of Trump’s backed candidates lost close contests around the country, the former president took a lot of heat for the results of the midterm elections. The former president now blames Republicans who are pro-life, even though many observers had previously blamed him for forcing the party to field unqualified candidates.
Trump remarked on Truth Social, “It wasn’t my fault that the Republicans didn’t live up to expectations in the midterms.” Large numbers of people were turned off by the way many Republicans handled the “abortion problem,” namely those who insisted on “No Exceptions,” even in the case of rape, incest, or the life of the mother.
“Also, the folks who campaigned so hard, for decades, against abortion got their goal from the U.S. Supreme Court and simply plain disappeared, never to be seen again,” he said.
Trump’s assault on pro-life voters coincides with a dramatic drop in poll numbers for his potential presidential bid in 2024. Before the elections, Trump had a commanding lead in primary surveys, typically receiving more than half of the vote.
Since Trump’s preferred candidates like Herschel Walker in Georgia, Kari Lake in Arizona, and Dr. Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania were soundly defeated in the midterm elections, support for Trump’s supposed opponents has skyrocketed.
Last month, a Wall Street Journal survey of Republican primary voters showed that Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis had a double-digit lead over Trump for the GOP nomination.
DeSantis hasn’t officially declared his candidacy, but he’s been dropping clues since Election Day. As several of his backers shouted, “Another two years! We’re looking at another two years! “because he was re-elected on November 8th.
Trump might also be challenged by Mike Pence, Trump’s former vice president, and Mike Pompeo, Trump’s former secretary of state.
