Trump Blasts Biden’s New Iran Deal: “Call Out the 25th Amendment”

Former President Donald Trump issued an appeal to Republicans, urging them to use the 25th Amendment, which deals with the succession of the presidency in the event that the current president is unable to carry out the powers and responsibilities of the office. Trump made this call in reaction to the contentious arrangement that the Biden administration reached with Iran for the release of five kidnapped Americans in return for the unfreezing of $6 billion in Iranian assets. Trump’s call came as a direct result of the controversy surrounding the transaction.

Trump voiced his disapproval of the agreement, arguing that the United States had, in essence, participated in a hostage swap with Iran and paid them $6 billion. He questioned if Vice President Joe Biden had gotten a bribe for the agreement, and he stressed the substantial amount of money that was at stake. Trump drew parallels between this situation and his own administration, during which he allegedly freed 58 prisoners at no cost to the government.

He pushed Republicans to demand the 25th Amendment, claiming that Biden is incapable of performing his duties as vice president. After he had previously rejected rumors of it being used against him during the January 6 riot in the Capitol in 2021, Trump has now called for the adoption of the 25th Amendment.

The processes for the succession of the presidency and the transfer of power in the event of the president’s inability to serve are outlined in the 25th Amendment, which was enacted in 1967. In the past, it has been used, most notably during the nomination processes of Gerald Ford and Nelson Rockefeller, as well as during medical procedures involving Presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush.
