Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker “should be in jail,” according to President Donald Trump’s harsh condemnation on Wednesday, for allegedly neglecting to protect ICE personnel during federal operations and escalating protests.
Trump made his comments as tensions increased and Texas National Guard members were sent to the Chicago region to assist federal authorities and protect property. In the midst of organized disturbance, he accused the city’s administration of being careless and of neglecting their responsibility to federal employees.
Governor Pritzker retorted that he would not compromise, describing Trump’s remarks as an assault on local government and democratic values. Mayor Johnson denounced the comments as an effort to criminalize resistance and recently issued an executive order prohibiting federal agents from conducting operations on local property.
In terms of federal immigration enforcement and the distribution of power between state, municipal, and federal law enforcement, the conflict intensifies the conflict between Trump’s administration and Democratic-led localities.
