Trump Fails to Protect Social Security Lifeline, 71 Million Americans at Risk

President Donald Trump promised to safeguard the federal benefits that about 71 million Americans rely on — but recent moves at the Social Security Administration have some experts saying the commitment has not held up. Staffing cuts and delays in services are already affecting retirees, disabled individuals, and other benefit recipients.

Critics point out the backlog at the agency has grown worse over the last year, making it harder for people to get vital checks, process claims, or access disability evaluations. For many elderly or low-income Americans, missing a single benefit payment can cause serious hardship.

Advocates warn that continued under-funding could erode the trust millions place in the system. They argue that ensuring timely benefit distribution should be treated as a priority, not a political bargaining chip — especially when so many households depend on those checks every month.
