In the unfolding drama of the 2024 presidential race, former President Trump has unveiled his latest moniker for a political opponent, coining “Nikki New Taxes” for Nikki Haley, his former United Nations ambassador and now a rising contender in the polls.
Haley, previously the governor of South Carolina, has been narrowing the gap with Trump in key states, with a recent survey in New Hampshire showing her trailing the former president by just four points. This development signals a potential challenge to Trump’s dominance in the Republican field.
Trump’s campaign committee seized on this momentum in a strongly worded email, which was released on Friday. The email sharply criticizes Haley’s record, accusing her of betraying the working class and being overly influenced by lobbyists. It specifically points to her support for a substantial increase in South Carolina’s state gas tax, which contradicts her earlier promises to voters. Additionally, the email lambasts her for backing a significant hike in the state sales tax.
The campaign’s spokesperson, Steven Cheung, also targeted Haley’s stance on entitlement reforms in the email. According to the Trump campaign, Haley’s support for changes in Medicare and Social Security, including raising the retirement age, categorizes her as a “RINO” (Republican in Name Only), a term often used to denote a lack of adherence to traditional Republican values.
Trump, known for his catchy and often cutting nicknames for political adversaries, has a history of branding his opponents with labels that stick. During his 2016 and 2020 campaigns, he famously dubbed former Florida Governor Jeb Bush as “Low Energy” and Texas Senator Ted Cruz as “Lyin’ Ted.” In the 2020 race against President Biden, Trump consistently referred to him as “Sleepy Joe.” The latest nickname, “Nikki New Taxes,” seems to be in line with this strategy, as Trump prepares for the intensifying competition within the Republican Party.
