In a recent appearance on Cavuto Live, Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley voiced her concerns over the exclusion of former President Donald Trump from Maine’s ballot, labeling it a threat to American democracy. The move, initiated by Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows and based on allegations of Trump violating the 14th Amendment during the events of January 6, mirrors a similar action taken in Colorado. Haley, while competing against Trump in the primaries, criticized these decisions.
Haley emphasized the importance of transparency and allowing the electorate to make informed choices, rather than having elected officials dictate the eligibility of candidates. She expressed her belief that such actions go beyond the scope of individual candidates and have broader implications for the democratic process. “This isn’t just about Donald Trump or the Republican Party,” Haley said. “It’s about the integrity of our democratic system, where such precedents could alter its very nature.”
During her campaign, Haley has pledged to pardon Trump of any federal convictions if she were to win the presidency. She stated confidently, “I will defeat Donald Trump fair and square. I don’t need him to be removed from the ballot to do that.” Her tenure as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations under the Trump administration and her current position in the GOP primary polls were also noted.
Haley’s comments come in the wake of a controversial town hall in New Hampshire, where she was criticized for not acknowledging slavery as the primary cause of the Civil War when asked about it. This incident has been a focal point of discussion in her campaign.
The Republican primary race also features notable figures such as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, and former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson. Following Texas Representative Will Hurd’s withdrawal from the race, he endorsed Haley, bolstering her campaign.
