Zohran Mamdani, the next mayor of New York City, received surprising praise and support from President Donald Trump during their meeting at the White House following his earlier harsh rhetoric.
Over the course of a half-hour meeting, both men’s tone changed dramatically. “We want this city of ours that we love to do very well,” Trump stated, referring to Mamdani as a “rational person.” He promised federal support and stated that he expected Mamdani to be “a really great mayor.”
According to Mamdani, the discussion was “productive” and concentrated on common concerns including affordable housing, lower grocery costs, and New Yorkers’ safety. Trump had previously called Mamdani a “100% Communist lunatic,” and his campaign had frequently attacked him during the mayoral campaign.
Although observers warn the political concord may be shaky, the encounter demonstrates a fresh desire for cooperation between the president and the incoming Manhattan leader despite past hostility.
