President Donald Trump declared that the majority of Americans, excluding those with high incomes, will get a “tariff dividend” of at least $2,000 per person. He declared that under his trade policy, the money collected from import tariffs will be used to finance the payment.
The declaration came after he declared on social media that the United States is now “the richest, most respected country in the world, with almost no inflation” and that those who oppose tariffs are fools. In addition, he asserted that the tariffs had produced “trillions of dollars” and promised to start paying down the nation’s debt, which now stands at over $37 trillion.
Although economists predict that it would take between $300 billion and $500 billion to provide $2,000 each qualified American, Treasury data shows that approximately $195 billion in tariff revenue has already been received in 2025. The president’s ability to impose tariffs under an emergency powers law is presently being examined by the Supreme Court.
Congress would need to approve the plan, and specific implementation information, such as eligibility requirements and distribution strategies, has not yet been made public.
