Trump Prosecutor Tries to Suppress Subpoena over Misconduct Allegations

Fani Willis, the district attorney of Fulton County, is currently engaged in a legal dispute regarding a subpoena issued in a divorce case that is connected to the prosecution of former President Donald Trump by her office. Willis has encountered opposition to the subpoenaed pretrial deposition request in the divorce proceedings involving Nathan Wade and Joycelyn Wade.

As part of the ongoing divorce case, the subpoena is scheduled for January 23. However, Willis, represented by her attorney Cinque Axam, contends that the demand to depose her is an effort to “annoy, embarrass, and oppress” her. Willis’ interrogation, according to Axam, is an intrusion into the criminal proceeding against Trump.

The contentious matter arises from accusations put forth by Ashleigh Merchant, the attorney for Trump codefendant Michael Roman. Willis and Wade, a special prosecutor in the Trump case, have been accused by Merchant of having an extramarital affair. Additionally, she asserts that this association has generated a conflict of interest and critiques their alleged misuse of public funds to finance personal vacations.

According to county records, Wade’s law firm has been paid approximately $654,000 in legal fees for its services in the Trump case since January 2022. This payment was reportedly authorized by Willis. The aforementioned financial arrangement has prompted inquiries regarding the fundamental characteristics of their relationship.

Joycelyn Wade’s attorney, Andrea Hastings, declared her intention to settle the divorce in a private and equitable manner. On the contrary, the attorney for Willis asserts that Nathan and Joycelyn Wade have been divorced without dispute or culpability for more than two years.

In the midst of these legal complications, Willis has speculated that the surveillance Wade and she are experiencing may have racial motivations. During a speech at the Big Bethel AME Church in Atlanta, she made reference to this by stating that the case has only affected herself and Wade, both of whom are African American.

Merchant, on the other hand, ponders why Willis would oppose the subpoena when her testimony would not be detrimental to her reputation. Willis is accused of attempting to fabricate a conspiracy in order to evade direct confrontation with the allegations.

Willis is scheduled to hear Merchant’s motion on February 15. Judge Scott McAfee of the Fulton County Superior Court has mandated that prosecutors submit a response by February 2.

As the high-profile case against Trump and seventeen others, who were indicted by a Fulton County grand jury in August on suspicion of conspiring to tamper with the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia, provides the context for this legal dispute. Trump, Roman, and the remaining defendants have all entered not-guilty pleas; Trump has even demanded that the case against Willis be dismissed on account of these allegations.
