In a recent interview, former President Donald Trump placed responsibility for the events of January 6th on former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Trump claimed that Pelosi, who was in charge of security, turned down a request for 10,000 soldiers, and if she had not done so, the events of January 6th would not have occurred.
Trump did not answer whether he had called military or law enforcement that day and suggested that Pelosi was responsible for the events because she had the authority over the Capitol’s security. He also mentioned that the Capitol police had testified against her, alleging that they had destroyed evidence related to Pelosi.
Pelosi’s office responded to Trump’s allegations, stating that they were completely made up and that numerous fact-checkers had confirmed that Pelosi did not plan her own assassination.
The decision on whether to call National Guard troops to the Capitol is made by the Capitol Police Board, which includes the House sergeant at arms and the Senate sergeant at arms, along with the architect of the Capitol. The board decided not to call the Guard ahead of January 6th but eventually requested assistance after the rioting had already begun.
The events of January 6th have been the subject of ongoing investigations and debates, with various individuals and entities being scrutinized for their roles or responses during that time.
