President Trump has been granted the authority to maintain command of the National Guard troops that are presently stationed in Los Angeles by a federal appeals court. The decision rescinds a previous lower court order and affirms that the president acted within legal boundaries when federalizing the Guard in response to recent unrest associated with immigration enforcement protests.
The ruling is the result of a dispute between the federal government and the state of California regarding the control of approximately 4,000 National Guard members and 700 Marines who were deployed during the intensified demonstrations. In light of violent incidents that targeted federal agents and government property, the court determined that the president’s actions were justified.
