President Donald Trump is calling on the Washington Commanders to revert to their former name, the “Redskins,” demanding that the change happen “immediately.” In a recent statement, Trump criticized what he labeled as political correctness and claimed the original name honored Native American heritage.
He also urged the Cleveland Guardians to return to their previous name, the “Indians,” echoing support from groups who say the rebrands erased cultural identity rather than protected it.
Trump warned that he may intervene to block a proposed stadium redevelopment at the RFK site in Washington, D.C., unless the team complies. The Commanders adopted their current name in 2022 after retiring the “Redskins” moniker in 2020 amid mounting public pressure.
Both teams have previously defended their rebranding decisions, citing respect and inclusivity, but the president’s remarks have reignited a nationwide debate over tradition, identity, and the influence of politics in professional sports.
