New York Attorney General Letitia James was met with heckling during a town hall event in Westchester County as scrutiny mounts over an ongoing federal investigation into alleged mortgage fraud tied to her personal real estate dealings.
The disruption came when a man in the audience, reportedly a supporter of former President Donald Trump, shouted that James should apologize for spending taxpayer dollars on legal battles against Trump. The man was quickly escorted out by security.
James is currently under investigation over claims she misrepresented details about two properties—one in Brooklyn and another in Virginia—allegedly to secure more favorable mortgage terms. The allegations include declaring the Virginia property as a primary residence and underreporting the number of units in the Brooklyn property.
James has called the investigation politically driven, asserting it is retaliation for her previous legal actions involving Trump. Despite the interruption, she remained composed during the event, reiterating her stance that the allegations lack merit and reaffirming her respect for public discourse.
The event, attended by attorneys general from several other states, comes as a federal grand jury in Virginia continues to review evidence in the case. James has retained prominent defense attorney Abbe Lowell, with some legal expenses reportedly supported by state funds.
