During a campaign event in New Hampshire, former President Donald Trump acknowledged and appreciated Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. Trump notably ceased using the term “DeSanctimonious,” which he had previously coined for DeSantis, signaling a shift in their relationship.
Addressing an enthusiastic group of supporters, Trump expressed his gratitude for DeSantis’ endorsement and lauded the quality of his campaign. “Ron was incredibly gracious in his support, and I’m thankful for that. I’m looking forward to working together with Ron and others to defeat Joe Biden,” Trump said.
Trump’s remarks came after DeSantis released a video stating his campaign suspension, citing the strong support for Trump among Republican primary voters. DeSantis praised Trump’s presidency, referencing the constant opposition and legal challenges from Democrats. “It’s become evident that a majority of Republican primary voters back giving Donald Trump another opportunity,” DeSantis commented.
Acknowledging the challenging journey ahead, DeSantis emphasized that he could not in good conscience continue to seek support without a clear path to victory. “I would do anything to ensure a successful outcome, but I cannot justify asking our supporters for their time and resources without a sure path to victory,” he said.
In his speech, Trump also spoke about the difficulties of campaigning and commended DeSantis for running a commendable campaign. He stressed the importance of party unity in defeating President Biden in the upcoming election.
By setting aside the “DeSanctimonious” nickname, Trump indicated a shift from viewing DeSantis as a competitor to an ally in the broader political landscape.
This development reinforces Trump’s position as the frontrunner and symbolizes the party’s unity as it gears up for the upcoming presidential election, marking a pivotal moment in the 2024 Republican primary.
