During his State of the Union address, President Donald Trump called on Congress to approve legislation that would bar lawmakers and their immediate families from trading individual stocks.
The proposed measure, known as the Stop Insider Trading Act, would prevent members of Congress, as well as their spouses and dependents, from purchasing publicly traded shares and would require advance public disclosure before any stock sales.
Trump’s remarks drew a notable bipartisan reaction, with Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren standing to applaud the proposal.
In delivering his comments, the president also made a pointed reference to former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
The moment highlighted an unusual show of cross-party support for the idea, which has already moved through a House committee and now awaits further action in Congress.
