Trump Warns Putin After Russian Missile Test, Cites U.S. Nuclear Submarine Near Russian Waters

President Donald Trump issued a sharp warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday after Moscow confirmed the test of what it called an “invincible” nuclear-powered cruise missile. Speaking aboard Air Force One during his flight to Asia, Trump emphasized that the United States maintains unmatched nuclear strength, declaring that one of America’s most advanced submarines is currently operating “right off Russia’s shores.”

The president’s comments came after Russia announced a successful test of the Burevestnik missile, a weapon capable of traveling thousands of miles and evading traditional defense systems. Trump downplayed the significance of the test, insisting that such displays were unnecessary given the destructive power already possessed by both nations. “They don’t need to fly 8,000 miles to show force,” he said. “We have a nuclear submarine—the best in the world—right off their shores.”

He went on to criticize Putin’s ongoing aggression in Ukraine, urging the Russian leader to “end the war instead of investing in weapons that only escalate global tensions.” Trump described Russia’s actions as reckless and counterproductive, calling for de-escalation and renewed focus on diplomatic solutions.

White House officials later clarified that Trump’s remarks were intended as a firm message of deterrence, underscoring the U.S. Navy’s strategic capabilities and its readiness to protect American interests and allies. The Pentagon declined to provide details on submarine operations, citing national security protocols, but defense analysts noted that U.S. submarines routinely patrol international waters near potential adversaries as part of standard deterrence strategy.

The Kremlin responded cautiously, dismissing Trump’s statement as “political rhetoric” while reaffirming that its missile test was conducted within Russian territory and in compliance with international law. Russian state media, however, used the remarks to highlight rising tensions between Moscow and Washington, warning of the risk of renewed nuclear brinkmanship.

As the war in Ukraine enters a prolonged phase and both nations flex military power, Trump’s words mark another moment of sharp geopolitical theater—reminding the world that beneath the diplomacy lies an enduring contest of strength between two nuclear superpowers.
