At Iowa’s biggest political event, former president Donald Trump grabbed the podium as the lights lighted the stage, ready to face the world. However, when he entered the spotlight, a shocking surprise awaited him: a song with satirical lyrics that used “prison” as the backdrop for the presidential candidate who was dealing with federal criminal accusations blared from the speakers.

A strange choice, given the situation, but the Iowa GOP had chosen it for all candidates’ speeches at the Iowa GOP’s Lincoln Dinner that evening. The upbeat melody of “Only In America” by Brooks & Dunn filled the air, its upbeat melody a stark contrast to the weight of the lyrics: “One could end up going to prison, one just might be president.”

Reactions on Twitter exploded, with one person alleging that Team Trump was not happy with Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds over the music choice. Trump went confidently onto the stage in front of the excited, sold-out audience of over 1,000 people, but most of the audience seemed to miss the comedy.

The song “Only In America” features lyrics that normally celebrate individual goals and American pride: “One kid dreams of fame and fortune, One kid helps pay the rent, One could end up going to prison, One just might be president.”

Trump discussed the difficulties of pursuing his presidential dreams throughout his speech, accepting the scrutiny that comes with the job. He said with his trademark bravado, “If I weren’t running, I wouldn’t have anyone after me, or if I was losing by a lot, I wouldn’t have anybody after me.”

Given that Trump is under indictment and has pleaded not guilty to several offenses relating to sensitive documents, the future may be filled with judicial fights. Unfazed, he stepped in front of the audience, ready to grasp the opportunity and leave his imprint.

The crowd kept a tight eye on the action as it played out in this political theater, where irony danced with ambition and fate, ready to witness the drama of power, politics, and the chase of dreams.
