In a landmark 7–4 appeal decision, U.S. judges have declared that the bulk of President Trump’s sweeping import tariffs breached legal limits. The court found that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA)—which grants the president emergency powers—does not authorize such broad use of import taxes without explicit approval from Congress.
Despite the ruling, most of these tariffs will stay in effect until October 14, giving the administration time to appeal to the Supreme Court. This judgment represents the most significant judicial challenge yet to the Trump administration’s unilateral trade enforcement.
Supporters of the ruling say it restores the constitutional balance of power over trade, while critics argue sustained tariffs remain critical for both economic fairness and national security.
