President Donald Trump’s landmark tax and spending bill passed the House of Representatives in a razor-thin 215 to 214 vote after hours of tense negotiations and political maneuvering.
The legislation, known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” proposes to make Trump’s 2017 tax cuts permanent while introducing over $1.5 trillion in federal spending reductions. It also seeks to scale back certain green-energy tax incentives and implement stricter work requirements for Medicaid recipients.
House Speaker Mike Johnson played a critical role in securing the vote, reportedly taking extraordinary steps to maintain the GOP’s slim majority throughout the night, including temporarily pulling a Republican nominee from an external post to return for the vote.
While the bill marks a major victory for the Trump administration, it also raises concerns over its long-term impact on the national deficit, with projections suggesting a potential multi-trillion-dollar increase.
The bill now advances to the Senate, where it is expected to face additional challenges and revisions before it can become law.
