Two U.S. Marines stationed in Turkey were ambushed and assaulted by a group of Turkish nationalists in Istanbul, as tensions between the two countries continue to simmer. The incident reportedly occurred when the Marines, dressed in civilian clothing, were targeted by a mob near a popular tourist area.

Eyewitnesses stated that the attackers, who were chanting anti-American slogans like “Yankee, go home,” approached the Marines without warning. The group, estimated to include around 20 individuals, proceeded to physically assault the servicemen. Local authorities quickly intervened, and the Marines were able to retreat to safety with the help of law enforcement officers.

The incident is believed to be linked to growing nationalist sentiments within Turkey, partly fueled by recent geopolitical disagreements between Ankara and Washington. It comes at a time when diplomatic relations have been strained over issues including military cooperation and regional policies.

The U.S. Embassy in Turkey has condemned the attack, calling for an immediate investigation and expressing concern over the safety of American personnel in the region. The Marines were reported to have sustained minor injuries but are expected to recover fully. The Turkish government has yet to issue an official response to the assault, but local officials have assured that an investigation is underway.

This attack underscores the volatile nature of current U.S.-Turkey relations and raises concerns over the safety of American citizens and military personnel in the country. As diplomatic efforts continue to navigate the complexities of their bilateral ties, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges that lie ahead.
