In a recent incident that turned chaotic, Twitch streamer Kai Cenat was issued a desk appearance ticket and subsequently released from a Manhattan precinct. The trouble ensued after Cenat allegedly encouraged a mob of his young fans to gather at Union Square Park, leading to a series of unfortunate events.
At the press conference, NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey revealed that Cenat was expected to face two counts of inciting a riot and unlawful assembly in connection to the mayhem that occurred on Friday afternoon. However, the actual filing of these charges remained uncertain.
Cenat, who boasts over 20 million followers, left the 19th Precinct on the Upper East Side early Saturday and made a hasty exit into a waiting black SUV without offering any comments to the media. Apparently, he received only a desk appearance ticket and was allowed to leave.
The incident was triggered by a gaming accessory giveaway that Cenat had organized at Union Square Park without obtaining the required permit. What was intended to be a fun event quickly spiraled into chaos as thousands of young fans flooded the surrounding streets.
During the three-hour melee, a total of 65 individuals were taken into custody, including 30 juveniles. Disturbing videos emerged, capturing rioters hurling cones, bottles, and rocks at one another, innocent bystanders, and even the responding police officers. As a result, three officers and four civilians sustained injuries during the anarchy.
Among those injured was a 17-year-old, initially believed to have been shot, but later determined to have been hurt by fireworks thrown into the crowd by one of the rioters.
The situation worsened as the rioters destroyed food carts, vandalized stores, and targeted several police cruisers, including that of the Chief of Departments.
The event came to the police’s attention when Cenat announced it on his Twitch channel, promising to give away free PlayStation 5s, computers, microphones, and other gaming accessories. While around 300 people initially showed up, the crowd quickly swelled in size, thanks to the viral power of social media, eventually reaching thousands by the time Cenat arrived.
Efforts by the NYPD to control the situation were met with challenges as the enthusiastic crowd was difficult to manage. Maddrey expressed that dealing with such a large and impassioned gathering required a delicate approach from the police.
The chaotic scene was finally brought under control after Cenat was taken into custody.
Aerial footage depicted the streets overflowing with the mob, who employed barricades to confront the police, throwing bottles, eggs, and even construction equipment. Amidst the chaos, they shouted derogatory phrases directed at the police.
Maddrey believed that had the event been properly organized through official channels, it might have been more manageable for the police. However, he also pointed out that some responsibility fell on the parents, urging them to be vigilant and intervene in their children’s social lives, especially when it comes to social media and events like this.
The Chief emphasized the importance of enjoying life responsibly and urged young people not to let gatherings turn destructive. He underscored that the intention was not to hinder fun but to ensure that events remained safe and respectful to all involved.
