Governor Greg Abbott of Texas has criticized the treatment of migrants from the southern border by Democratic municipal and state leaders, citing sanctuary cities as an example of hypocrisy in his estimation. During an interview with “America’s Newsroom,” Abbott highlighted the apparent inconsistency in the position taken by Democratic leaders, who assert their support for sanctuary policies but exhibit resistance when migrants enter their jurisdictions.
Abbott’s remarks follow Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’ critical assessment of the governor’s migrant busing policy, which he termed a “remarkable failure of governance.” A protest against the border policies of the Biden administration, this policy, which Abbott initiated last year, entails transporting migrants by bus to New York City and other sanctuary jurisdictions. According to Abbott’s office, since the policy’s inception, around 27,000 migrants have been relocated to New York City in an effort to relieve strain on communities along the Texas border.
Particularly in light of the daily influx of individuals traversing the Texas border, the governor of Texas deemed New York’s incapability to manage the migrant influx “absurd.” He juxtaposed this with the influx of migrants that New York City experiences on a monthly or weekly basis.
Abbott additionally ascribed responsibility to President Biden for the border crisis, citing the revocation of policies implemented during the Trump administration that had resulted in a decline in unauthorized border crossings. He made particular mention of the construction of a border wall, the “Remain in Mexico” policy, and the Title 42 policy, as well as the cessation of catch-and-release practices. Abbott posits that the aforementioned challenges would not be encountered by metropolitan areas such as New York, New Jersey, and Chicago had the Biden administration implemented immigration laws that were enacted by Congress.
Abbott, who expressed optimism for significant immigration reform, underscored the discontent and indignation that the American people have directed at the leadership in Washington, D.C. He perceives an opportunity for the Republican Party in Congress to enact significant immigration legislation with the potential to curtail unauthorized border crossings.
Abbott’s statements emphasize the persistent discourse surrounding immigration policies and the function of sanctuary cities within the Americas.
