This week has seen a rise in the number of members on Capitol Hill calling for the freezing of Iran’s 6 billion dollars in assets. Almost twenty senators affiliated with the Republican Party have written a letter to the Biden administration requesting that the cash that were transferred to a Qatari account in exchange for the release of five American detainees one month ago be froze. A bill to freeze the assets is being introduced by Senators Marsha Blackburn, Tom Cotton, John Kennedy, and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. The law declares that any statutory sanctions imposed with respect to Iran that were waived, suspended, or lowered in accordance with an agreement with Iran are hereby resumed. This applies to any and all sanctions that were waived, suspended, or reduced. Concerns have been raised among senators as a result of an agreement signed in September between the Biden administration and Iran to release the monies that had been blocked. These members contend that Iran uses the money to assist Hamas. Recent statements made by Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo indicate that the United States and Qatar have reached a “quiet understanding” on the movement of money. Mike Gallagher, who is the chairman of the China Committee in the House, is spearheading a group of members from both parties in an effort to urge President Biden to refreeze the money. As a result of the ongoing escalation of the confrontation between Israel and Hamas, considerable numbers of people on both sides have been killed and property has been severely damaged.
