As President Trump and First Lady Melania ascended the escalator at the United Nations ahead of his address to the General Assembly, the escalator abruptly stopped. The halt forced them to walk up the stationary steps.
The incident activated a built-in safety feature in the escalator, which was triggered by a videographer who was walking backward ahead of the Trumps. The safety mechanism is designed to prevent people or objects from becoming caught in the escalator’s machinery.
Later, Trump’s teleprompter also failed during his speech’s opening, leading him to begin without the aid. He joked that the person operating it would be “in big trouble.”
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt demanded an investigation to determine whether the escalator stoppage was intentional. The UN clarified that the escalator’s stoppage was accidental and attributed the teleprompter to being managed by the U.S. delegation.
