A child psychiatrist has reached a $1.6 million settlement with the University of Louisville after being dismissed for publicly challenging the medical treatment of gender dysphoria in minors.
Dr. Allan Josephson, who served for over a decade as chief of child and adolescent psychiatry at the university, was removed from his position after voicing concern about the growing use of hormone therapy and surgical interventions on children. His comments, made during a panel discussion, sparked backlash and eventually led to his termination.
The legal battle that followed centered on whether his academic and professional speech was protected. Josephson’s attorneys argued that his firing was a violation of his right to express medically grounded views, even if they ran counter to prevailing trends in the field.
While the university agreed to the settlement, it did not admit wrongdoing. The case has become part of a broader national conversation about academic freedom and the consequences of expressing dissenting perspectives within medical and educational institutions.
