Following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, a number of left-leaning college professors issued public statements sharply criticizing his legacy and the movement he led. They argued that the organization he founded enabled divisive rhetoric and accused him of creating a culture that normalized controversy over constructive debate.

Some faculty members specifically pointed to Kirk’s efforts to spotlight academics through his “watchlist” initiative, which listed professors deemed too liberal, suggesting this contributed to a climate of intimidation on campus. In their responses, the professors stressed that while violence must always be condemned, they rejected the framing of Kirk as a martyr without acknowledging what they describe as his role in fomenting polarization.

Their remarks have ignited backlash from conservative students and organizations who view the commentary as insensitive and inappropriate during a period of national mourning. Many are demanding universities take disciplinary action against the professors for their commentary. Meanwhile, the schools involved say they are reviewing the comments for potential breaches of conduct policies.
