The election of Zohran Mamdani as mayor of New York City has sparked sharp divisions among residents of the Upper East Side. Within private neighborhood forums, some residents voiced fears that his progressive platform and past statements could jeopardize public safety and change the city’s culture. Others pushed back, accusing their neighbors of overreacting or engaging in biased rhetoric.
One Facebook group member, a single mother, said she and her son might leave the city while others labeled her fears as exaggerated. In turn, moderators of the forums instituted new rules after discussions turned accusatory and personal.
The controversy highlights a broader political and social rift in the affluent Manhattan neighborhood, as longtime residents and newer arrivals clash over what the mayoral outcome means for the city’s future.
