UPS Cargo Jet Erupts in Fireball After Takeoff in Louisville, Killing at Least Seven

A catastrophic plane crash at Louisville’s Muhammad Ali International Airport has left at least seven people dead and 11 others injured after a UPS cargo jet exploded moments after takeoff, turning a routine flight into one of the worst aviation disasters in the city’s history.

The McDonnell Douglas MD-11, bound for Honolulu, took off shortly after 5 p.m. when witnesses reported seeing flames spewing from the aircraft’s left engine. Seconds later, the massive jet veered off course and slammed into an industrial area near the end of the runway, triggering a series of explosions that engulfed nearby buildings in fire.

Videos captured by bystanders showed a fiery orange plume rising hundreds of feet into the air as the plane disintegrated on impact. Thick black smoke blanketed the surrounding neighborhoods, prompting a citywide emergency alert and a shelter-in-place order for residents within a five-mile radius.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene within minutes, battling intense heat and scattered debris. Louisville Fire Chief Gregory Frederick described the site as “a scene of complete devastation,” noting that sections of the aircraft were scattered across several blocks. “Our teams are working to recover victims and prevent secondary explosions from remaining fuel,” he said.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the flight’s data and cockpit voice recorders have been recovered and sent for analysis. Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are now examining potential causes, including mechanical failure and engine detachment.

UPS released a statement expressing “deep sorrow” over the tragedy and pledged full cooperation with authorities. “We are heartbroken by this loss and extend our prayers to the families and colleagues affected,” the company said.

Residents described a terrifying scene as the jet crashed just seconds after takeoff. “It sounded like thunder, then a boom so strong it shook the windows,” said one local witness. “When I looked outside, the sky was black and orange.”

Officials have confirmed that among the dead are three crew members and four people on the ground. The fire took more than two hours to contain, with crews continuing to douse smoldering wreckage into the night.

The Louisville crash has reignited debate about the safety of aging cargo aircraft and the risks of operating heavily loaded long-haul jets over urban areas. The MD-11 model has been involved in several high-profile incidents in the past two decades, and aviation experts say investigators will closely examine whether structural stress or outdated components played a role.

As recovery teams work through the wreckage, city leaders have called for a day of mourning, describing the tragedy as “a dark moment for Louisville and for everyone touched by this disaster.”
