A collision occurred between the merchant vessel Besiktas-M and the USS Harry S. Truman, a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, in the Mediterranean Sea, near Port Said, Egypt. An instantaneous assessment was conducted by U.S. Navy officials in response to the incident, which transpired late at night.
As per the initial reports, the carrier’s propulsion systems were fully operational, and no injuries or inundation were reported. The Besiktas-M, a Panamanian-flagged bulk carrier, incurred damage above the waterline but resumed its journey without further assistance.
It had been conducting operations in the Mediterranean and Middle East since September, when the Truman was deployed to the region. Before the collision, the vessel had visited a port in Greece. Although the congested maritime traffic in the vicinity of the Suez Canal is well-known, the precise cause of the incident remains unknown.
In addition to this incident, there have been other recent naval incidents in the region, such as an earlier mishap involving an F/A-18F Super Hornet. An investigation has been initiated by the U.S. Navy to ascertain the factors that precipitated the collision and to evaluate the potential impact on future missions.
